Slattery’s Hurricane. 1949. USA. Directed by Andre de Toth. Written by Herman Wouk and Richard Murphy. With Richard Widmark, Linda Darnell, Veronica Lake, John Russell. 35mm. 83 min.
Former Navy fighter pilot and adrenaline addict Will Slattery (Richard Widmark) continues to live a life of action and disorder even in his peacetime job, flying a private plane for a mysterious industrialist (Walter Kingsford) and romancing his high-strung, dependent secretary (Veronica Lake, in her last Hollywood role). When an old flame turns up (Linda Darnell) married to Slattery’s best friend from the service (John Russell), the opportunity to make a real mess of things is irresistible. Shot partly on location in Miami during the tropical storm season, the film makes elegant use of the natural metaphor as the rising threat of a hurricane reflects the protagonist’s inner turmoil.
