It Happened Tomorrow. 1944. USA. Directed by Rene Clair. Screenplay by Dudley Nichols and Rene Clair. With Dick Powell, Linda Darnell, Jack Oakie. DCP . 85 min.
Loaned out by Fox to independent producer Arnold Pressburger, Darnell brings a spark of life to an oddly depressive wartime fantasy film directed by French exile René Clair. Dick Powell, nearing the end of his run as a romantic lead, plays a bright young newspaper man at the turn of the century whose wish for a leg up in his business is granted by a ghostly old man who gives him a copy of tomorrow’s newspaper. Powell’s apparent clairvoyance—he’s able to predict a spectacular box office robbery—draws him to a stage psychic (Darnell, dressed in gorgeous show gowns by René Hubert) and her hustling uncle (Jack Oakie).
